Creative problem solving helps children explore who they are and what makes them unique. When they are given the chance to think freely and find new ways to approach challenges, they begin to understand their own ideas and values. These experiences allow kids to express themselves, take ownership of their thinking, and feel proud of their contributions. As they solve problems in their own way, they gain confidence and start to build a clearer picture of their identity.

At the same time, creative problem solving helps children build skills they will need throughout their lives. It teaches them how to think critically, work with others, and stay flexible when facing new situations. These skills are important in school, in future careers, and in everyday life. When children practice thinking in new ways and learning from their mistakes, they become more prepared to handle change and find success in a wide range of settings.

WHat

Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. Imagine being faced with a problem that requires an original solution. It can be frightening. Now imagine not being afraid to solve that problem – that is what OM members learn. This skill and self-confidence will carry over to all areas of their lives.

OM brings the classroom to life as students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve our unique open-ended problems. OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more. This international program is designed to help students at all learning levels grow as individual learners, grow as team members, and to reach their full potential.

Who

Odyssey of the Mind is open to students and learners of all abilities, kindergarten through college, and it brings together creative problem-solvers from schools, homeschool groups, and community organizations around the world. Each team is composed of up to seven students who work together to solve long-term problems and compete in spontaneous challenges. Teams are formed within five age-based divisions,

Primary (Grades K–2) – Non-competitive, developmental program.

Division I (Grades 3–5)

Division II (Grades 6–8)

Division III (Grades 9–12)

Odyssey Inclusive* (K-age 22)

Odyssey Inclusive provides opportunities for neurodiverse students and students with disabilities to enhance their visual and performing arts skills, social skills, teamwork, academics, and creative problem solving abilities through a challenging and FUN learning process. Odyssey Inclusive is part of Odyssey of the Mind.

Who

It all starts with the membership! To begin, become a member by purchasing a membership for your school or community group. Once your order is processed, you will have access to the current year’s full problem details, program materials, and connects you with Maine OM.

With one membership you can form a team for each problem in each division (age group) housed within a school. If two teams of the same age want to compete in the same problem, additional memberships are available at a discounted rate—this will then double the amount of teams you can have. While competitions are like no other, some use the problems as curriculum or as an activity without competing. If that’s the case, there is no limit!
